The Caucasian Ovcharka male Ujo came in our lives in 1995 at the age of 4 months. He lived with my parents and had his own yard and my parents' house to guard. He was a very essential part of our ”pack”, because we met almost daily.

Ujo was a very friendly, outgoing, independent and wise dog. He was excellent in using calming signals. Guests and other dogs was welcome, at least when they are not big, black dogs…

When the opportunity to check out wider spaces was given, Ujo took advantage of it. There was no fence Ujo couldn`t cross. Ujo lived outside almost all the time. Only then when it was very cold he would come inside for half an hour.

As younger Ujo visited some dog shows receiving a critique ”good”, but in his older days Ujo was a pet dog.

The Caucasian Ovcharka is a thousands of years old breed originating from the Caucasus. The breed has developed in the course of nature for guarding livestock and property. It is not a shepherd dog, although its breed name is sometimes translated into Caucasian shepherd dog is some languages. In my opinion, the Caucasian is not suitable to live in block of flats or rowhouses, it needs at least a yard and a house to guard. It has to have a job, although it is not a working dog like for e.g. the German Shepherd. Caucasian Ovcharkas are excellent flock guards, for e.g. Ujo's brother is a guard dog at a fox farm. The breed has a very strong guarding instinct which has to be taken into account when thinking about getting a Caucasian. One has to observe the character of the puppy's parents. We had such good luck when we had Ujo, he herited his good character from his parents. This breed deserves all the respect and value that belongs to it.
